The Ciambra Neighborhood

The term 'Ciambra' derives from the French 'chambre,' probably because there were the rooms of the Crown palace during the rule of the D'Angiò in Sicily. The ancient neighborhood, built on the characteristic rocky spur that, from behind the Cathedral of Monreale, overlooks Palermo, probably originated around the years of the construction of the Cathedral, as it was the closest place for the workers and servants of King Guglielmo II. Comprising a collection of narrow alleys and small squares, Ciambra features the Palazzo Cutò, a building dating back to the 17th century, the residence of Alessandro Filangeri, Prince of Cutò.
