Abbey of San Martino delle Scale

Until the mid-16th century, there was a small church of which no architectural evidence remains. Following the resolution of the superiors of the Cassinese congregation to fix the structures of the monastery, the construction of the present abbey church was undertaken in 1564, and we know that this work was completed in 1595.

Both dates are found in the rich documentation preserved in the Abbey's Historical Archive, and also from the two marble inscriptions on the external façade of the church. The dedication (consecration for worship) of the church, however, took place on 20 May 1602, during a solemn rite presided over by the archbishop of Palermo Diego Aedo.

Inside, the abbey church presents itself in all its sobriety. In fact, if we look at the later embellishment of both the apsidal space and some of the chapels, we understand that the monks' intention was to have the walls of the church covered with marble and other decorations. But the grandiose project was never fully executed due to a lack of funds.

Nothing remains of the church that existed before the present one but a few marble works from the late 15th century such as the statue of the Madonna of Consolation, a portal and a stoup.
